Air temperature data were collected on a daily time-scale from the Saddle climate station (3525 m) since 1981. Over time, various circumstances have led to days with missing values. Some of these values were estimated from redundant sensors and nearby climate stations. Greenland 1987 was a basis for the methodology; however when it was not possible to use this methodology, new methods were developed.

Missing dates from the Niwot Ridge data set were determined that crossed month or year boundaries for data up to 2008. When such missing dates were found, adjacent sites where data were present were identified based on a pre-determined hierarchy (see below).

(Method flag 1) regression methodology:
Regression was performed using the chart recorder data at the missing site and the adjacent site using a 14 day window prior to and after the missing day. The regression equation was applied to the value at the known site to determine the value for infilling the missing site. An r2 value above 0.6 was considered acceptable. If the r2 was below 0.6 or missing, the standard deviation method was used to fill in the missing value (see Method Flag 2).

Ratios of known site values and standard deviations were used in order to determine the replacement values. The standard deviation was taken for the day (mm-dd) in question throughout the climate record at both the known site and the unknown site and applied as follows:
