\doc TITLE. Precipitation data for D1 chart recorder, 1964 - ongoing. ABSTRACT. Precipitation data were collected on a daily time-scale from the D1 climate station (3743 m) since 1964. Over time, various circumstances have led to days with missing values. Some of these values were estimated from nearby climate stations. INVESTIGATOR. University of Colorado Long-Term Ecological Research Data Report 87/7. METHODS. The qualifying days variable is the number of days to which a precipitation value pertains. Missing dates from the Niwot Ridge data set were determined that crossed month or year boundaries for data up to 2008. When such missing dates were found, adjacent sites where data were present were identified in a pre-determined hierarchy (see below). (Method Flag 1) Daily Ratio Methodology: Total precipitation for the date in question was calculated for the the period 1968-2008, for both the 'Known Site' and the 'Unknown Site', only for days where daily values existed for both sites (missing values and QD's > 1 were removed). A ratio was determined [Unknown Site : Known Site] based upon these totals. This ratio was then multiplied by the value for that date at the 'Known Site' in order to determine the 'Unknown Site' value. (Method Flag 2) If there was a known total at the 'Unknown Site' that crossed over into the following month, then the known reported total was kept, and the newly determined values were ratio-ed based upon that known total. Precipitation data adjacency hierarchy: D1: 1) Saddle (if not in winter [OCT-MAY] due to bias that blowing snow can have) 2) C1 3) AP (Allenspark) -> C1 -> D1 (determine values at C1 for these days from AP, then regress to D1 from those determined values) 4) WP (Winter Park) # Chart notes: 2011-07-07 to 07-21 Marmots in rain gauge? all data bad 2011-07-25 to 08-14 Marmots in rain gauge? all data bad 2012-02-29 Can't tell when pen started coming back down: min possible=42mm, max possible=88 mm (took average of both for recorded number) 2012-05-10 Possible leak in bucket explaining large drops of pen 2012-05-15 to 05-25 Daily values unknown 2012-05-29 to 06-05 Pen got stuck, no daily values 2012-06-06 Pen off chart, potential animals 2012-07-06 to 07-22 Daily values lost; total precip 140 mm but with evaporation, could be more 2013-05-15 05-14 to 05-22 Chart lost 2013-06-04 Pen fell off chart; no ppt values 06-04 to 06-14 2013-06-17 Pen fell off chart; ppt 06-17 to 07-08 = 36 mm 2013-09-09 Flood event 2013-11-16 Pen fell off chart; no ppt 11/16 - 12/12 2014-03-04 Pen fell off chart; total 02-21 to 03-4 = 57 mm 2014-03-25 Pen fell off chart; total 03-20 to 03-25 = 18 mm 2014-04-01 Pen fell off chart; total 03-26 to 04-1 = 2.3" or 58 mm 2014-04-11 Pen fell off chart; total 04-9 to 04-11 = 0" or 0 mm 2014-04-25 Pen fell off chart; total 04-21 to 04-25 = .05" or 1 mm 2014-05-14 Pen fell off chart; total 05-1 to 05-14 = 1.75" or 44 mm 2014-06-10 Pen fell off chart; total 06-7 to 06-10 = .1" or 3 mm 2014-08-19 Pen fell off chart, total 08-5 to 09-19 = .6" or 15 mm 2014-11-11 Pen fell off chart; total 11-7 to11-11 = 1" or 25 mm 2015-06-11 2 day ppt total (pen fell off chart) 2015-06-19 Pen fell off chart - ppt total is for 6/15-6/19 2015-12-11 Pen popped off arm on 12/11 2015-12-12 Pen popped off arm on 12/12 2015-12-13 Pen popped off arm on 12/13 2015-12-14 Pen popped off arm on 12/14 2015-12-15 Pen popped off arm on 12/15 2015-12-22 Total ppt from 12/17 to 12/22 = 60 mm 2016-01-19 No data between 1/14 - 1/19; no reason given 2016-03-22 Data from 3/19-3/22 suspect; likely evaporation but unable to determine pen movement for sure 2017-01-18 to 2018-02-01 Pen off and clock dead.
